Four Jobs, One Continuous Film

A traffic-bearing deck system has to do four separate things at once, and understanding them separately is what makes the specification make sense.

1. Waterproofing plane. Water must not reach the steel — not at the field, not at a lap, not at a fastener, and above all not at a joint. OR-80SLM or OR7K establishes this layer as a seamless, monolithic film.

2. Wearing course. Something has to absorb wheel contact, braking, and turning shear without transmitting it to the waterproofing bond line. Flak Jacket 1 carries the build and the tear strength for that.

3. Traction surface. Aggregate broadcast into the wet membrane and locked with a second pass. Because it is embedded rather than applied over, it wears with the membrane instead of separating from it.

4. Detail continuity. Expansion joints, drains, curbs, column bases, bollards, and deck-to-concrete transitions. 7001 Primer carries the system across dissimilar substrates so the waterproofing plane is genuinely continuous rather than merely mostly continuous.

All of it goes down as one chemically bonded film. Polyurea bonds to itself within the recoat window, so the wearing course and the waterproofing layer are not two systems relying on an inter-coat bond — they are one membrane with a graded build.

Detailing the Joints and Penetrations

Field failures on traffic-bearing decks are overwhelmingly detail failures. Six that deserve attention on every job:

Expansion joints. The deck is designed to move here, so the membrane must be designed to move here too. The system is terminated into the joint detail rather than sprayed blindly across it, and the movement capability of the assembly is confirmed against the design range before anything is applied.

Drains and scuppers. The membrane is carried into and through the drain body so the waterproofing plane terminates below the water line, not beside it. A membrane that stops at the drain flange puts a seam at the lowest point on the deck, which is precisely where water stands.

Curbs, upstands and wall bases. Coated as an integral cove continuous with the deck. A cold joint at the base of a curb is a horizontal seam facing directly into standing water.

Column bases, bollards and rail posts. Every penetration gets primed and coved. These are also the points that take vehicle impact, which is another reason build thickness locally is increased.

Deck-to-concrete transitions. Where a steel deck meets a concrete slab, ramp, or apron, 7001 Primer allows the membrane to run continuously across both substrates without a change of system.

Ponding and drainage. Polyurea tolerates standing water, but standing water on a deck is a structural and safety issue regardless of the coating. If the deck ponds, correct the slope or add drainage; do not ask the membrane to be the answer to a drainage defect.

Selecting Products by Service, Not by Habit

Flak Jacket 1 (FJ1) is the wearing course anywhere wheels turn, brake, or load the deck. Parking decks, ramps, loading platforms, equipment decks, wash bays. Build it at 80–120 mil depending on load class.

OR-80SLM Silver Lining Membrane is the waterproofing specification where the deck is fully exposed — rooftop decks, marine and pier decking, and any assembly where the membrane is the roof for the space below. Pure polyurea, Miami-Dade approved.

OR7K Polyurea covers covered decks, interior platforms, and the underside and supporting framing of a traffic-bearing assembly, where waterproofing and corrosion resistance are needed but full weather exposure is not.

7001 Primer appears on nearly every deck job: galvanized steel, painted or previously coated steel, and every dissimilar-substrate transition.

On appearance: aromatic polyurea chalks under direct UV. It is cosmetic — waterproofing, adhesion, and mechanical properties are unaffected — but on an exposed parking deck where the owner will notice, we can include an aliphatic topcoat in the spec. Ask.
